Many people confuse spirituality with religion, rituals, and belief systems preached by certain gurus or written in sacred texts. But spirituality is not a belief, a ritual, or a culture—it is the very essence of who we are. It is the journey of every individual to discover their true nature and move beyond their current limitations.
Religion often acts like a structure created for survival and social harmony. It gives people rules, duties, and a sense of belonging. But spirituality begins when you start to question the structure itself. When you ask, “Why am I here? Why am I living like this? How can I go beyond this?”—that is the moment you step beyond religion and move toward true spiritual awakening.
The Frog in the Well Analogy
Imagine a frog living inside a well. It finds comfort, food, and a sense of security within those boundaries. But it knows nothing beyond the walls of that well. Religion works much like that—it teaches us how to live, behave, and survive within certain limits. But when the same frog dares to climb out and look at the vast world beyond, that act of courage is what we call spirituality.
Spirituality begins where contentment with the ordinary ends. It invites you to break free from old patterns, explore the unknown, and realize that existence is far deeper than what religion can define.
Religion as the Foundation of Survival
Religion can be seen as a set of survival practices. It helps maintain social order and defines basic moral principles—what we call Dharma. Every role we play in life carries its own dharma: Pati Dharma (the duty of a husband), Sati Dharma (the duty of a wife), Putra Dharma (the duty of a son), Guru Dharma (the duty of a teacher), and Shishya Dharma (the duty of a disciple). These are not wrong by themselves; they create structure and stability in life.
The problem arises when these structures become rigid. When rules turn into chains instead of support, they block the path to inner freedom. True spirituality is not about rejecting dharma but about understanding its essence and moving through it toward liberation.
The Journey Beyond Survival
To survive is to live within boundaries. To be spiritual is to transcend those boundaries. You can live a decent life being religious—but to experience your highest possibility, you must rise beyond survival and touch the realm of the limitless.
Reality is not meant to confine you—it is meant to lift you higher. Human life reaches its true potential only when one dares to go beyond what is known, beyond the comforts of belief, and beyond the structures of society.
Spirituality is not a rejection of religion. It is the blossoming of religion into freedom. It is the process of transforming rituals into realization, duties into awareness, and survival into liberation.
